RARITAN VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, NATATORIUM

SOMERVILLE, NEW JERSEY

The renovation of the natatorium at Raritan Valley Community College addressed three major areas of need.  The original brutal concrete space lacked character, was furnished with inadequate lighting and suffered from poor accoustics.

A major feature of the design is the installation of light pipe to illuminate the pool.  Light pipe consists of a light bulb at one end that illuminates a reflector over the swimming area.  With this configuration in place, no scaffolding is required to change bulbs over the pool., since all bulbs are located over dry land.  This is also a huge energy saving initiative, since only one bulb is required.

PJA addressed the acoustics by specifying lapendary panels installed at the ceiling to absorb sound while providing form to its geometric shape.  The school colors were incorporated in a paint scheme that accentuated the space’s design.

This project was featured in Interior Design Magazine.
